Exploitable results

To overcome the barriers that currently restrict the widespread introduction of the heat pump concept into the market, it is necessary to design an adequate technology transfer action. The project aimed to ensure that the results of heat pump research and technological development in Europe can be transferred to potential users, in particular the building sector. Heat pumps can offer energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly heating, cooling and dehumidification in houses, offices and other large buildings, and even process industries. Over the last decade, the EU research programmes have allowed the efficiency and operating costs of heat pumps to be improved. These projects have also established the credibility of cycles, which can operate without using either CFCs or HCFCs. There are, however, two limiting factors to the application of heat pumps. First, the continuing low cost of energy. Second, the lack of stimuli to invest in environmentally-friendly systems have made heat pumps comparatively unattractive to the householder.
