The objective was to increase knowledge of gasoline and diesel fuel injection leading to engines having higher fuel efficiency and lower emissions. The interactions between fuel sprays, air flow and wall impingement were investigated in test rigs and in test engines by modern optical techniques, primarily for several commercial injectors. Models and numerical codes were developed to predict spray characteristics such as droplet break-up, drop-let atomisation and interaction with air streams, and compared with results from test and real engines. In internal combustion engines, combustion starts with the injection of a fuel. Typically, liquid fuel introduced in the combustion chamber breaks-up into droplets which will evaporate and mix with the surrounding air. The behaviour of these droplets in the turbulence field inside the combustion chamber has a significant impact on combustion efficiency and the emission of pollutants. This project aimed to better understand the interaction between aerodynamic features of a range of engineering flows and liquid sprays. Computer-based modelling techniques were included to enable the results to feed back into the engine design process.
