Exploitable results

Compact two-phase heat exchangers may find a wide variety of applications as useful devices in process industries, but in terms of their development they lag significantly behind single-phase heat exchangers. This project has significantly pushed their development forwards through the development of high performance evaporative heat transfer surfaces, of both tubular as well as planar geometry. Significant potential for the application of compact two-phase heat exchangers in the process industry has been recognised, but this equipment is not currently at a sufficiently advanced stage of development for widespread application. This project has addressed this issue and developed improved designs of cost-effective high performance evaporation heat transfer surfaces, for both tubes as well as perforated plates. The project has investigated the performance of improved finned tubes in evaporative heat exchange. Both single tube and tube bundles were experimentally as well as theoretically studied using Computational Fluid Dynamics. Moreover, novel perforated plates were experimentally studied as elements for compact plate heat exchangers.
