Interest by industry in process optimisation for minimum energy usage at the site-scale is significant as the cost saving and environmental benefits are huge. This project has developed a methodology to optimise site-scale energy usage in the process industry which can help to achieve reduced energy usage in production plants. Optimisation methods for minimum energy usage at the process plant scale has been a research & development (R&D) issue for over 10 years. Many of the techniques already developed are not sufficiently understood, and have not been sufficiently disseminated, but interest in this issue amongst site managers remains strong. Indeed arguments state that the biggest energy saving benefits can only be achieved at this scale. This project is another step forward in a long-term R&D effort aiming to respond to this interest. The objective was to develop a methodology able to optimise site-scale energy usage in the process industry. Process plant and utility distribution network (heat, power, cooling) combined models will be linked with different optimisation methods to solve real industrial problems.
