Time-dependent variations in effective in-situ stresses caused by changes in reservoir pressure

Objective

To understand the effect of changes in fluid pressure on the local in-situ stress field in a reservoir. Knowledge of reservoir response during production will lead to a better understanding of the stress changes that occur, which will be useful in planning subsequent development strategies.

The partners will carry out studies aimed at characterizing field stresses and their orientations, stress gradients and local stresses within and around hydrocarbon reservoirs, taking account of local geological and structural controls. Field-derived data for these studies will be obtained mainly from Norsk Hydro fields.

Various simulators will be investigated and tested against the field data. The chosen simulator will then be used to model field observations of time-dependent stress changes on a field for which adequate data are available.
