A micro climatic envelope

Objectif

The micro-climatic envelope is a new concept which is neither a sealed enclosure nor a simple application of renewable energy systems to existing building type envelopes.

The overall objectives are:
1. The design of a micro-climatic envelope
1.1 The architectural concept defining the form and detail of the micro-climatic envelope.
1.2 The analysis of climatic conditions and definition of the climatic control systems including energy input/ recovery of the envelope. 1.3 The detailed study of this envelope including structure, cladding, internal elements, incorporation of special equipment such as solar collectors, shading devices and other low energy systems, in order to define a new product which can be industrialized.

2. The verification of the architectural and functional feasibility of the envelope.

The publication of a presentation book on the design of the
micro-climatic envelope which combining all the data from the research project including:
- Presentation and detail drawings of the project.
- The conclusions of the project subjected to Jourda & Perraudin defined architectural concepts;
- Reactive architecture- non 'schizophrenic' -Nomadism
- The overall protective shelter

The envelope proved to operate as a climate moderating device. This means that the buildings experience a more temperate climate in the winter. Overheating in the summer is prevented by shading, ventilation, water evaporation cooling and vegetation. This results in a reduced energy consumption of up to 30% and up to 24% less CO2 emitted. The buildings also do not experience the same degree of wind chill factor as they would normally. Condensation problems can be combated with draining water basins.
The micro-climatic envelope is to act as an independent shelter to new and existing buildings, it could provide temperate "indoor / outdoor" spaces for public or private social life. Inner buildings and occupants are protected from extreme external climatic conditions and pollution but psychologically the occupants are not 'enclosed
allow visual and physical contact with the exterior and thus controlled interaction with natural seasonal changes. The envelope will be designed to react to climatic conditions, optimizing the capture and utilisation of natural energy sources (solar, wind power, rainwater recuperation ...etc.). The internal environment (light, temperature, acoustics, air changes ...etc.) is protected and controlled by the envelope. The application of the envelope will be orientated towards climatic conditions in Northern Europe.

This project is to demonstrate that solutions to energy problems can reconcile people with nature and climate, and high quality architecture with technical and enviromental constraints.

Programme(s)
