The development of catalysts for deep hydrodesulfurization of fuel for diesel engines

Objectif

Particulate emissions by diesel engines are very sensitive to the fuel nature and composition and, in particular, to the presence of sulphur. The objectives of this project consist on the development of advanced catalysts for the deep hydrodesulfurization of diesel fuels to 100 ppm sulfur and, possibly, lower values.


The project consists of an integrated programme in which catalyst preparation, activation, characterization and performance testing will be evaluated. The aim is the synthesis of dedicated catalysts for the hydrodesulfurization of diesel fuel.

The programme can be subdivided into the following tasks :
1) the verification of the leads from the existing literature on the nature of the refractory sulfur containing compounds;
2) to define the factors which play a key role in the deep
hydrodesulfurization of diesel fuel in order to reduce the sulfur content below 500 ppm, notably 100 ppm and lower;
3) the determination of the detailed reaction mechanism and the kinetics for deep hydrodesulfurization;
4) the assessment of the factors which play a key role in the deep HDS of diesel fractions, as inferred from the kinetic evaluation of the reaction and the nature of the refractory sulfur compounds;
5) the development of advanced catalysts for the deep hydrodesulfurization of diesel fuel to 100 ppm and,possibly, lower values.
