Exploitable results

Heat transfer by thermal radiation is often used in industry for speeding up drying processes. The opportunities for achieving enhanced radiant heat transfer by using new coating materials with selective radiating properties is assessed in this project. This would lead to faster drying compared to conventional methods, resulting in significant energy savings. The objective of this project was to develop an advanced radiant burner for drying purposes, with an efficiency at least 20% higher than present drying systems. It was thought that, by matching the radiance spectrum of the burner with the absorption spectrum of the load, this could be achieved. Opportunities for enhanced heat transfer by adjusting the radiance spectra of gas-fired radiant surface burners, have therefore been assessed. This is achieved through the application of special new coating materials with selective radiating properties to the burners.
