One of the main goals of the photovoltaics industry is to bring the cost of electricity generated using this technology as close as possible to the cost of fossil fuel generated electricity. The concentrator system developed during this project has demonstrated the high potential for the achievement of this goal. Cost studies have shown that large concentrating systems have the highest potential to produce photovoltaic (PV) electricity in Europe at close to fossil fuel generating costs. The potential of such systems has been relatively ignored to date, yet skills exist in the component manufacture and design expertise for the construction of such systems in Europe. The goal of the EUCLIDES project (European concentrated light intensity development of energy sources) was to design all the components of a PV system using a large area optical collector to focus sunlight onto a small area solar cell. The system was to be designed such that a collector and a solar assembly are capable of being manufactured at volume at a cost of 161.4 ECU/m 2 of aperture area with an incident energy to electricity conversion efficiency of 17.3%, giving an electricity generation cost of 0.08 ECU/kWh in the climate of Madrid. At least one functioning prototype of the system was to be developed during the project.
