A cost effective absorption heat pump with water as refrigerant

Resultado final

This project aimed to develop a new design of heat pump, for use in domestic applications. The project work focused on the innovative use of water as a refrigerant and hydroxides as absorbents. The project achieved success with respect to performance and compactness, but the complexity of the research limited the attaining of the commercial goal. Up to now, absorption heat pumps with low capacity (for domestic space heating/ cooling) are very expensive or not available. The project aimed to develop, design and manufacture a cost-effective double-effect absorption heat pump with a temperature lift at least 10K higher than conventional lithium bromide machines. This would be achieved by using water as a refrigerant and, instead of lithium bromide, hydroxides as absorbent. The machine should be cost-effective by using cheap and compact plate heat exchangers. a
