Geological characterisation of shallow marine sands for reservoir characterisation and high-resolution stratigraphic analysis

Objetivo

The aim of the project is to develop a reservoir geological framework for evaluating the geometrics, reservoir properties and heterogeneities of shallow marine tidally-influenced sand bodies, particularly in terms of their dimensions, reservoir flow unit thickness/quality trends and fluid flow barrier distribution. Detailed reservoir characterisation studies will be undertaken in the context of a stratigraphic high-resolution sequence to facilitate application in hydrocarbon exploration and development.
The completion of the project resulted in the compilation of a substantial amount of summary data as well as considerable interpretation carried out on the geological characteristics of the formations studied. The database, developed as a deliverable of the project, is an extensive compilation of information on tidal deposits and tidal sandstone reservoirs and contains data from the literature and from field operations. It may be used as a basic reference guide for modern and ancient tidal deposits and for modelling purposes. The user can make a search and adapt the database to his own needs, and it can be updated as new information becomes available.
The reservoir characterisation of clastic depositional environments (fluvial, deltaic, deep marine, etc.) has provided an important framework for understanding the nature and control of the main geological uncertainties affecting the efficient development of hydrocarbon accumulations, particularly reservoir dimensions and geometry, sand body architecture/stacking patterns, reservoir interconnectedness, permeability trends and the distribution of reservoir heterogeneities. This project will evaluate the nature and origin of these geological features in shallow marine tidally influenced sand bodies, which represent one of the less well known clastic reservoir systems. Emphasis will be directed towards an analysis of their reservoir characteristics and their impact on development
geology and reservoir scale fluid flow. Basin scale models and potential for stratigraphic traps will also be considered.
The project will involve the application of facies analysis, sequence stratigraphy, reservoir characterisation and fluid flow modelling of several examples of tidally influenced sand bodies, with emphasis on transgressive shallow marine sands from the Lower Cretaceous and Tertiary of NW Europe. The study will utilise data systematically acquired from both outcrops data sets) and subsurface hydrocarbon accumulations (12 data sets), which will include the full range of sand body types and their associated reservoir heterogeneities. The key elements of this research project are as follows: (1) to characterise the main reservoir bodies/flow units in terms of their facies, dimensions, orientation, architecture and reservoir properties utilising conventional outcrop techniques supplemented by gamma ray, minipermeameter and analogue dipmeter measurements, (2) to define the geometry, dimensions and distribution of reservoir heterogeneities and permeability baffles, (3)develop actualistic and theoretical reservoir/fluid flow models and evaluate the significance of reservoir heterogeneity and reservoir architecture on fluid flow, development geology, reservoir modelling and hydrocarbon recovery, (4) to establish a high resolution sequence stratigraphic framework for the main stratigraphic units investigated, in order to assess the origin, significance and extent of the main bounding surfaces and internal stratal features, and (5) to assess the stratigraphic trapping potential of these deposits and develop geological models to assist in predicting their occurrence, geometry and distribution.
