Objective
To study various cycles of said family and to optimize them with respect to efficiency, emissions including CO2, feasibility and operability as a base for consideration on economy.
The temperature limitation of Pressurized Fluidized Bed Combustion (PFBC) and the resulting efficiency limitation of pure PFBC Combined Cycles can be overcome by integrating gas turbine topping cycles.
At first, natural gas will be considered as fuel for the high temperature topping cycle. The potential benefit of water - or steam - injection will be evaluated. The overall pressure ratio and the PFBC operating pressure are the main variables for the optimization, when a state-of-the-art gas turbine inlet temperature is assumed. Additional variables are at hand with the steam cycle. The two heat sources for steam generation, namely the heat released from the PFBC boiler on one hand and the waste heat on the other, must carefully be balanced.
The availability of gas turbines with the appropriate design data is considered the main constraint for the optimization. With the project going on, three different coal gasification processes providing the gaseous fuel for the high temperature topping cycle will be included in the study. The potential benefit associated with the combustion of residues from the gasification and gas clean-up process in the integrated PFBC has to be evaluated.
