Advanced AC/DC/AC converter for variable speed wind turbines

Objective

Development of a 10-50 kW advanced AC/DC/AC voltage source converter fitted with a synchronous or permanent magnet generator with an integral control unit, to realize rugged and high efficiency generator systems for variable speed wind turbines, with dynamic loadings which will not exceed 150% of the rated loads. The system will also be very appropriate to the mains with respect to harmonic distortion and power factor.
With the work done so far, a 30 kW advanced alternating current to direct current to alternating current (AC/DC/AC) converter has been realised, from which the grid side inverter has completely, and the machine side rectifier has been tested up till their respective rated voltages and currents. The integral control system has been completed, implemented in a personal computer and has been completely tested on a 3 kW active pitch controlled, variable speed windturbine with permanent magnet generator and a controllable load.
R&D will focus on:

1) Development of high efficiency / high quality voltage source AC/DC/AC converters for mains connection (in the range of 10-50 kW) of variable speed wind turbines, fitted with a permanent magnet or a synchronous generator; the converter is to be operated at a power factor around one with the higher harmonic voltage distortion less than the international standards.

2) Development of control strategies and integration of the sub-system with emphasis on optimal energy capture and minimizing transient loads for wind turbines with passive blade pitch control as well as with active blade pitch control.

3) Applicability for larger wind turbines (300-1000 kW) on the basis of the gained experience.

As a first step a 3 kW advanced AC/DC/AC conversion system (based on a voltage source inverter) and an overall control system will be developed and tested in combination with the wind turbine of the Imperial College (fitted with a permanent magnet generator) ar RAL. Subsequently, a 30 kW conversion system will be developed and tested in combination with an overall control system. Tests of this system will be carried out at ECN laboratory. Thereafter, the system is to be tested in combination with a 10.6m Lagerwey wind turbine at the ECN wind turbine test station.
