Objective
The aim of the project is to develop a Baltic Marine Environment Information System which allows users to search information using a geographical user interface and text retrieval tools and to retrieve bibliographic references and original documents over the Internet. It will promote, facilitate and improve co-operation, resource sharing and networking between libraries in Baltic Sea countries.
Technical approach
The main steps in developing the BALTICSEAWEB service are:
assessment of user requirements;
development of bibliographic input and geographic indexes;
electronic management of original documents;
provision of GIS interface.
Key issues
A key goal of the project is to demonstrate the usability of GIS-based interface solutions for accessing library material. It will focus on "the integration of existing and emerging technologies into demonstrable applications" rather than on fully-fledged inter-operability of network resources. The design will also allow the integration of non-bibliographic data (e.g. measurement data) at a later stage (not covered by the current project) and suitable cross-references.
Impact and expected results
The geographical user interface of the BALTICSEAWEB will provide easy access to environmental information including bibliographic databases and full-text documents. Local and state governments as well as SMEs are expected to be among the prime users of the services offered by BALTICSEAWEB. A prototype demonstrator is now accessible through the project Web site.
