ILSES is a comprehensive system for presenting and managing metadata on data and literature, using a common thesaurus for keywords. The system can be used globally via the Web or locally, within an organisation. The thesaurus can be chosen by the (local) producers of metadata. ILSES has a three layer structure: WEB-ILSES, a search engine on the web for (meta)data and literature and a tool to select and order data from longitudinal or cross-national datasets; ADMIN-ILSES, which takes care of the communication between WEB-ILSES and the back-office database; This back-office can be DAT-& LIB-ILSES, but also another (relational) database that supports DDI for metadata on surveys and Z39.50 for metadata on literature.
WEB-ILSES is for researchers or policy makers who are looking for relevant data or literature. DAT- & LIB-ILSES is for content providers. It offers tools and procedures for the normalization, cataloguing and controlled distribution of (distributed) holdings of documentary and data resources. ILSES will enable content providers to increase and improve the utilization of their information resources while at the same time reducing their support burden per information request or retrieval.
