AUTOMATIC RAILWAY INFORMATION SYSTEMS FOR EUROPE

Exploitable results

Automatic Railway Information System for Europe. Within the project, prototypes of spoken language systems for obtaining train schedule information have been built in four languages: Dutch, English, French and Italian. The automatic train schedule inquiry service can potentially be accessed by every citizen in Europe, without the need to buy special purpose equipment: only a normal telephone is required. In the future the project looks forward to further develop the systems and to improve on their performances, both in terms of avoiding failures as in terms of functionality. The diversity of trials gives the project-partners the possibility to compare solutions and results. They will learn from each other without having to repeat all the experiments. It is expected that ARISE technology will be applied to other parallel industrial projects, such as a station-to-station information service in the relatively limited geographical area of the Netherlands. At the end of the project, more complex applications covering wider geographical areas should be possible.
