Objective
The project covers the design, construction and operation of a fluidized bed coal gasification demonstration plant integrated with a gas-steam combined cycle for electric power generation.
This project has the following main objectives :
- verify the simultaneous and integrated operation of the two systems (gasification and combined cycle) and the capability of the plant to follow the operating conditions required by the electrical network,
- verify the reliability of the process and of the equipment used.
- verify the expected demonstration plant performance.
- collect data.L%
The economics, carried out on phase 1, led to an evaluation of plant capital cost about 300 billion italian lira; time required for detailed design and construction of the coal gasification plant is approximately three years.
The gasification system allows the utilization of different feedstocks, including low rank coals. The integration with a combined cycle results in an increased power plant efficiency and environmental compliance. The gasification plant consists of two trains, each train including coal pressurization and feeding, one gasifier with a nominal capacity of 30 t/h of coal, ash removal, particulate recovery, heat recovery, gas quench, acid gas removal.
The power generating section of the plant (combined cycle) consists of two gas turbine units, each unit including one 100 MWe gas turbine and the relevant heat recovery boiler, and of one 90 MWe steam turbine. The gasification plant is designed to convert different types of coal in a low-btu fuel gas to feed one of the two gas turbine units, the other unit being fed by natural gas or distillate oil.
The net power of the demonstration plant is about 270 MWe while the efficiency ranges between 36.7 - 37.7% depending on coal.
