Objective
To build and operate a 1. 2 T/d (900 Kg gasoline + 350 Kg LPG) demonstration plant for the production of motor fuels from synthesis gas, which in a first step is converted to methanol.
The production process combines Haldor Topsoe's technology for methanol synthesis with Mobil Oil's technology for the subsequent conversion of methanol to gasoline. It is estimated this process innovation will yield energy savings of 15% in comparison with the conventional scheme.L%
Design parameters for the demonstration unit were carried out in an existing small pilot unit (20 1/gasoline/day) in Denmark.
These tests revealed that the integrated process results in surprisingly low deactivation rates of the zeolite catalyst if the temperature profile in the reactor is controlled. It appears that the operation cycle can be prolonged with a factor higher than five. This discovery offers substantial process savings and has formed the basis for a patent application.
The project involves the construction and operation of a pilot plant to demonstrate an optimized process converting synthesis gas hydrocarbons (i. e. gasoline). This process integrates Topsoe's technology for conversion of syngas into methanol and other oxygenates, with the technology of Mobil Oil for converting oxygenates into gasoline. A zeolite catalyst for the hydrocarbon synthesis is supplied by Mobil.
A first demonstration, subproject 1, will be performed with synthesis gas manufactured from natural gas and then (subproject 2) with coal. On subproject 1, the pilot plant is connected with an existing monotube steam reformer at HTA's facilities in Houston, Texas. The pilot plant was to be moved to an existing coal gasifier for subproject 2, however these plans have been revised (see later). Most of the plant was constructed in Copenhagen and then shipped to Houston for installation.
The plant was designed to a skid mounted concept. Operating pressures range from 20 to 65 bar abs with a flow of max +- 2000 Nm3/h maximum of (feed and recycle) flow through the gasoline convertor on steam.
Various reactor concepts and flow configurations can be tested.
The experimental program includes +- 5 runs of 6500 hours (+- 1,5 years) total duration and expected onstream factor for the pilot plant of 50%. The first runs involve a cooled MeOH/DME synthesis followed by the gasoline synthesis.
