DEMONSTRATION OF A COMMERCIAL SCALE SLAGGING GASIFIER

Objective

The overall objective of the programme is to acquire the design specifications and performance data to enable commercial slagging gasifiers to be designed and operated to meet predicted engineering and performance guarantees.L%
The first contract phase was carried out on the existing gasifier modified to incorporate design developments from the earlier tests. The specific objectives were to establish acceptable operational life of key components.
For more information about results of the different phases, see projects LG/521/83, LG/00450/84, LG/00498/85 and LG/00085/86.
The british gas/lurgi slagging gasifier operates at 25 to 30 bar and the coal (6-50mm) is introduced via a lock hopper into the top of the reactor. There it is gasified with steam and oxygen injected through tuyeres near the base of the reactor. Countercurrent flow of coal and product gases result in modest outlet temperatures of about 450c with no necessity for expensive high temperature heat recovery equipment. The low temperatures at the top of the bed result in liquid by-products such as tar and oil. Molten slag collects in a hearth and is removed through a slag tap. The process achieves complete conversion of coal, has low steam and oxygen consumptions, high throughput and high thermal efficiency. Low steam consumption results in low production of aqueous effluent. The gasifier is insensitive to coal reactivity, can handle highly swelling and coking coals and coals with refractory ashes can be gasified by the addition of flux.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
