ENGINEERING OF A FLUIDISED BED COAL GASIFICATION PLANT

Objective

To establish the engineering of a 200 T/d coal gas pilot plant for the testing of the U-Gas process.L%
This contract, to cover the design of the gasifier has been completed. Work on the construction of the plant has not been started.
The demonstration plant will be located at the Charbonnages de France research facility in Mazingarbe. The U-Gas process was developed by the Institute of Gas Technology (USA) to produce a low -to medium-BTU fuel gas from a variety of feedstocks, including highly caking, high-sulphur, and high-ash coals. The plant will be composed of 4 major sections :
* COAL STORAGE AND PREPARATION
Coal and coke (needed for installation start-up) arrive by box-car or lorry; storage capacity is 4000-5000 Tonnes of coal and 500 Tonnes of coke. The coal and coke are transported via conveyor to the gasification installation and stored in 300 and 100 Tonnes capacity silos respectively.
* GASIFICATION UNIT
After drying, the coal/coke is again stored. Two lock hoppers allow continuous feed to the gasifier. The cylindrical gasifier has a fluidization grid and Venturi ash extractor in its lower section.
Two cyclones allow fines to be separated from the product gas and recycled to the reactor. Ashes are extracted continuously from the bed;
then cooled, decanted and evacuated to tailings piles.
* GAS TREATMENT
At the cyclone outlet the gas undergoes a 3 phase treatment :
1. cooling by water quench and by passing through a waste heat boiler producing superheated steam at 40 Bars
2. first stage scrubbing and dust removal aimed at reducing particulate concentrations to below 30 mg/Nm3
3. Naphtalene removal, if necessary.
* GAS UTILIZATION
The product gas's principal composition is : H2 : 35-40%; CO : 30 -40%;
CH4 : 0-5%; CO2 : 20-30%
Pressure is 28 Bar at 50 deg. C. ; particulate concentration is 30 mg/Nm3.
The gas is used as fuel in the AZF boilers or burnerd in an incinerator.
Plant designs allow for gas turbines and natural as synthesis units downstream.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
