Objective
To demonstrate a new process for the manufacture of liquid fuels with boiling points ranging from that of gasoline to that of diesel and jet fuels. The demonstration takes place in an industrial pilot plant with production capacity of +- 900 Kg/day of gasoline plus +- 300 Kg/d C3 - C4 hydrocarbons or +- 2. 9 +/d of methanol equivalent. See project LG/3/80/DK and LG/9 /83/DK.L%
This is a continuation of existing projects (LG/03/3/80/DK and LG/9 /83/DK) dealing with the manufacture of synthetic gasoline.
The integrated process for liquid fuels is based on the principles developed and demonstrated in the gasoline project. The process involves Topsoe's proprietary catalysts for the conversion of syngas into methanol and other oxygenates, as well as for the synthesis of liquid fuels.
The project consists of 5 phases.
PHASE 1 : PLANNING AND BACK-UP
HTAS facilities in Copenhagen will be used for optimisation of the catalyst used for conversion of oxygenates to liquid fuels.
One version of the catalyst will be optimized for maximum gasoline ( inc. alkylate) yield, while another will be optimized for other liquid fuels such as diesel and/or jet fuels.
PHASE 2 : OPTIMISATION AND FINAL TEST OF PROCESS SCHEME
The operating parameters will be optimized at HTAS in bench-scale units and in a small pilot unit (+- 20 litres gasoline per day) at HTAS facilities in Frederickssund.
Initially, work will concentrate on determining the operating conditions and reactor design which will result in maximum gasoline yield. This will be followed by corresponding work on a scheme which is optimized with regard to liquid fuels other than gasoline.
PHASE 3 : OPERATION OF INDUSTRIAL PILOT
The experimental programme, to be conducted in Haldor, Topsoe, Inc. 's Houston facilities includes 5 runs with a total duration of 9,000 hours corresponding to 2 years of operation.
Run 1 - A test run to ensure proper operation
Run 2 - Final optimization of the gasoline process scheme
Run 3 - Demonstration of the gasoline scheme
Run 4 - Final optimization of the process scheme for the production of destillates
Run 5 - Demonstration of the destillate process scheme
PHASE 4 : PROCESS OPERATION ON COAL GAS
The two process schemes, gasoline and destillates, will be demonstrated in slip-stream unit which will be connected to an existing coal gasifier.
PHASE 5 : PROCESS EVALUATION
Engineering and process economy studies will be conducted to (1) guide the pilot work; (2) ascertain in the investment costs of an industrial-sized plant; and (3) establish operating costs for plant. The project is projected to cost DKR 42. 8 million, with each phase costing :
Phase 1 2. 8 million
Phase 2 2. 6 million
Phase 3 31. 7 million
Phase 4 5. 1 million
Phase 5 0
