COAL GASIFICATION FOR PRODUCING RAW GAS WITH LOW CALORIFIC VALUE TO BE USED IN BRICK WORKS

Objectif

To demonstrate the use of a conventional fixed bed gasifier with tar filters and tar reinjection and to check the possibility of using the produced raw gas from the fixed bed gasification process. The innovatory characteristic is the possibility of burning a raw gas with low colorific value, and containing the distallation products such as tars and oils, into the kilns and burners of the factory.L%
During the experimentation, the plant has run to a capacity of about 50-60% of nominal load, for two periods, namely from 20/10/87 up to 20/11/87, and from 8/3/88 up to 31/3/88.
During these periods, negative and positive results are summarized here below :
- Coal feeding system to gasification Good - No particular problem
- Tar recycle to gasifier Positive result
- Gasifier start-up Good - No particular problem
- Kind of product gas As expected
- Tar separation in cyclones About 20%, without demisters on
cyclones and ab. 30% with demisters
- Ash grinding and recovery No problem
- Obtained production ca. 7000000 Kcal/h.
This capacity resulted in excess for operation of one production line, constituted by a dryer and a furnace.
- Thermal output calculated only on product gas
About 80%
USE OF RAW GAS
Following addition of : Demisters on top gas cyclones; injectionof dispersant product into gas pipes; in line burner for gas heating to users; the situation has been much improved.
In conclusion, the experimentation showed that coal gasification plant has operated well and according to expectations. The ash recovery in the clay could be made without problem. The recycle of recovered tar inside the gasifier did not give problems, even if it requires to be further investigated.
Some problems arose, during the first running period, in gas combustion, due to the presence of tar, but it has been substantially solved with above modifications.
The plant was shut-down a first time on 20/11/87, and some modifications were made, improving the use of raw gas with tar.
ILV produces building bricks in Casei Gerola (near Pavia) at an annual rate of 160,000 T using 8,000 TOE of energy of which 80-90% as thermal energy. The project covers the relocation of an existing gasifier ot the ILV plant, its re-assembly and operation under trial conditions. The project consists of 5 phases:
1. Engineering work, dismounting of the existing gasifier, transport to the new site and civil engineering work.
2. Design of the new plant together with all auxiliary equipments. Issuance of purchase orders for the parts.
3. Assembly of the whole plant.
4. Start-up and test run of the plant
5. Tests and measurements on the plant.
The project started in August 1985 and will last until August 1988. The total cost is estimated at LIT 1,995 million. EEC support amounts to LIT 798 million representing 40% of the total cost excluding the gasifier cost.
The switch from fuel/gas to coal will save LIT 1,480 million equivalent
to 44. 5% of ILV's total fuel bill. The reuse ofthe ashes will add LIT 9 million to the savings. Coal handling however will add another LIT 25 million to the maintenance cost leaving a net saving of LIT 1,474 million equivalent to a 1. 36 year payback period. The project estimates a 92% efficiency.
