Development and initiation of measures aimed at reducing private cars in a touristic area

Objective

The purpose of the project is to integrate environmental protection with tourist development in the district of Aurich's coastal area, particularly with respect to reducing private car traffic.
A number of activities will be initiated that are aimed at shifting part of the traffic to bus services. Local groups and institutions participate intensively to help embed the idea of sustainability into the minds of tourists.
As the focus is decreasing private car traffic, the following steps will be taken:
- optimisation of bus and railway services
- selection of sites for improved infrastructure
- development of combined transport services (e.g. bus and bike)
- development of tourist attractions within cycling or walking distance from major accommodation facilities
- awareness-raising of tourists and locals on the subject of sustainability
- creation of a finely tuned system of incentives and restrictions.

It is hoped that all of these actions together will encourage people to make the trip to the coast less frequently by private car (tourists) and generally use cars less frequently (tourists and locals).
