Integrated Cooperation on Sustainable Tourism Development and Recreational Use in the Wadden Sea Area

Objective

The Wadden Sea area covers almost 10,000 square kilometres along the Danish, German and Dutch North Sea coast and is the largest wetland within the European Union. Large parts of the area have been nominated as Special Area under the Birds Directive, and a common designation under the Habitat Directive is in preparation. The national authorities in the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark have co-operated on the protection of the area since 1978, and trilateral Governmental Conferences are held every three years. The project represents an effort to intensify the co-operation aiming at the protection and sustainable use of the Wadden Sea area. The project is co-ordinated by the Danish regional administration in South Juthland County.

The project will prepare, test and implement models of communication and co-operation among authorities and organisations involved in the development of the Wadden Sea area. Special emphasis is placed on promoting popular participation in the decision-making processes. The project activities are based on strategy discussions at the 8th Wadden Sea Government Conference in 1997, and the project's results will be presented at the 9th conference in the year 2000.
