Objective
The project focuses on conservation oriented ploughing techniques used in olive groves and extensive croplands. The purpose of the project is to carry out demonstrations and technology transfer of these techniques. The project will be undertaken in high-risk areas of river water pollution and erosion caused by water. It is envisaged that at least 20-25 % of the farmers in the selected high erosion risk zones of Andalucía and Castilla-La Mancha will receive detailed information of these conservation techniques, their environmental benefits and their economic viability.
Traditional ploughing involves farming practices that often result in erosion and loss of fertile soil through run-off. It intensifies the degradation of the organic matter in the soil, diminishes its biodiversity and causes surface water pollution through sediments and residues of fertilisers and biocides. The main actions of the project are:
1. To demonstrate conservation-oriented ploughing techniques in olive plantations (three properties) and extensive croplands (three properties) with a high risk of environmental degradation.
2. Site monitoring and the publication of reports on the environmental benefits of conservation-oriented ploughing in the demonstration properties in terms of: a) erosion reduction, b) run-off reduction, c) surface water pollution reduction, d) soil biology/macrofauna and e) bird populations.
3. To provide technical advice over the three-year period of the demonstration project.
4. To organise visits to highlight the techniques and their effects.
5. To draft and publish technical information on the above topics, and ensure its proper dissemination amongst the agricultural co-operatives and the sector media (magazines, newspapers, radio and TV).
The principal result expected from this demonstration project is that conservation techniques will become widely applied by farmers in areas with a high risk of erosion and water pollution.
