Objective
The waste 'surplus' is compressed into high cubes, which are store into 16 covered boxes. The boxes are equiped with a biofiltration system, in order to avoid any emission of odours. A sprinkler system and a permanent monitoring of the temperature ensures the safe storage of the cubes. The leachates and rain water are collected and cleaned in an aerated pond.
This innovative process allows to:
- minimize the investment for the incinerator and optimize the equipment size,
- optimize the thermal recovery by burning the wastes when energy is more valuable,
- avoid the landfilling of untreated waste during summer time a reduce shutdown breaks for maintenance.
The industrial partner of this project is CYCLERGIE, a sister-company of EDF.
The population of the Canton de Born (south west of France on the atlantic coast) increases during the summer period from 33 000 inhabitants to 100 000 inhabitants with tourism activity. The waste production follows the same trend. The goal is to level the summer waste production by stocking the municipal wastes for a postponed treatment.
