Management System for Preventing Acidification due to Land Use in Acid Sulphate Soil Areas: Demonstration Project in the Lestijoki River Catchment

Objective

In parts of Finland (and in Sweden) acid sulphate soils are dominant. Acidity discharges from this soil have a severe effect on pH levels in rivers, particularly in the coastal Ostrobothnia areas. Acidity discharges are multiplied as a result of the construction of subsurface drainage systems in the flat coastal areas.

The Regional Council of Central Ostrobothnia in collaboration with the Regional Environment Centre, and a company specialised in lime applications are cooperatively working on this project, which has the object of investigating the most effective means of preventing acidity surges in rivers due to acid sulphate soils.

The project will survey and quantify the soils in various locations in the catchment area. As a second stage a dynamic model will be applied in order to evaluate the need for acidity neutralisation in the river and the need for lime filter drains in the catchment area. The third stage will be the construction of lime filter drains in selected farm lands. Finally, the project will monitor the effects of the constructed drains on the acidity and heavy metal contents in the Lestijoki river.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
