Increase in the size population of Columba bollii y Columba junoniae

Objective

One of the main aspects of this project is gathering data to enable the formulation of guidelines for the management of the species and their habitats. In those areas where the birds have disappeared or are seriously endangered, knowledge on their distribution and the status of the populations is being updated. More specific actions within the project include extermination of rats at the nesting sites on the slopes on Mount Tigaiga (island of Tenerife).

Finally, various measures will be undertaken to raise awareness of the laurel pigeons, notably by continuing campaigns already launched by the Regional Government, which include publication of information material, participation in an international congress and media work.

Bolle's laurel pigeon (Columba bollii) and the laurel pigeon (Columba junoniae), listed on Annex I of the Birds Directive, are endemic to the Canary Islands, where they inhabit the Macaronesian laurel forests, which have been classified as priority habitats under Annex I of the Habitats Directive in their own right. Bolle's laurel pigeon occurs on the islands of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. The distribution range of the laurel pigeon is even smaller , as it occurs only on the islands of Tenerife, La Palma and La Gomera.

Both species are currently considered to be threatened, even in danger of extinction on some islands, as is the case with the laurel pigeon on Tenerife or Bolle's pigeon on El Hierro. One of the two species has already disappeared completely from the island of Gran Canaria. Traditionally, the destruction of laurel forest and excessive hunting pressure are the two factors negatively impinging on the conservation status of these two birds. Forestry exploitation persists today in certain parts of the birds' distribution area, adding to other negative factors such as illegal hunting, construction of channels for irrigation and the presence of rats at their nesting sites.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
