Experimental programme on the conservation of Little Bustard Tetrax tetrax and associated fauna in France and Italy

Objective

On the basis of the management experience to be gleaned from these seven sites, the project seeks to establish a European action plan for the conservation of the little bustard and to stop the decline of its numbers in France.
Four main measures are foreseen: establishing optimum conditions for agricultural exploitation in terms of the conservation of birds of the plain, which concerns Tetrax tetrax but also Circus pygargus and Burhinus oedicnemus; trying out, together with the farmers, little bustard conservation measures which could evolve into agri-environment measures; gaining legal title and control over the use of the key areas (i.e. with the highest density of calling males); augmenting knowledge of the species' biology.
In parallel, information work targeting farmers, local politicians and administrations will be undertaken. International seminars are also foreseen to define a common strategy between experts from the four countries concerned (France, Italy, Spain and Portugal). Finally, a handbook on the management of litle bustard populations will be produced, drawing on the results obtained from the actions implemented at the seven project sites.

The little bustard (Tetrax tetrax) is a bird which, originally dependent on steppic environments, has adapted to various kinds of traditional agricultural landscape: ranges for sheep grazing; extensive crop farming. In France, the species subdivides into two populations. One is migratory, breeding in the vast cultivated plains of the centre and west of the country, and the other, considered to be sedentary, is found in the sub-steppic grazing ranges on the plains along the Mediterranean.

The world population of the little bustard is largely concentrated in Europe. The species is undergoing severe decline and has already disappeared from numerous countries, in particular in Central and Eastern Europe. In France, a catastrophic reduction by 80% of the population has been observed over the past 15 years, brought on by the intensification of agricultural techniques and practices, with a very real risk that the migratory subpopulation will vanish by the years 2010-2020. This alarming situation justifies labelling the LIFE project as an urgent action. Seven experimental sites of 1000 - 2500 hectares each, located in the arable plains of western France, have been selected to carry out pilot actions for the conservation of the little bustard.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
