Solids control plan for reservoirs

Objective

The reservoirs associated with the power stations are all located at medium height below the tree line in areas used for agriculture and tourism. All the storage reservoirs have a common problem - that of silting up. In order to avoid this problem this type of reservoir would generally be emptied and the deposited solids scavenged. The capacity of the ecological system to function correctly is disturbed directly after the scavenging process. The basic concept is that sediments transported into the reservoirs during periods of high water levels are to a large extent simultaneously removed using suitable means, and discharged at the same point in the river system as the water used to operate the power station. This would mean that the transport of solids in the whole river system would once more become a natural cycle. The method developed can be implemented in new reservoirs (prevention) and also in existing reservoirs through construction works.

Special solid particle transportation equipment should be used so synchornise, as far as possible, the entry and the removal of solids, and their discharge at the same point in the river as the water used to operate the installation concerned. Three items of technical equipment are required: a suffiently large clearance volume in the reservoir, an adjustable dredger and a transport system for the solid particles.
