Development and implementation of a pilot unit to recover solid wastes and sludges from the marble industry

Objective

To reach the maximum valuatio of solid waste produced in the marble extraction and manipulation in Almeria through the development of a productive process based on the know-how of S.A. Reverté that will transform them in technical Calcium Carbonates of high quality, suitable for a wide range of applications minimizing the public inversion necessary to build controlled rubbish dump. The treatment of 280.000 Ton/Year of solid waste and 64.000 Ton/Year of liquid waste is foreseen and 28 new jobs will be created.

A wide area in the province of Almeria is characterized for its tradition in extraction and manipulation of white marble. The present expolitation in quarries and marble manipulation has a ratio for the building lower than 30%, which cause the generation of a big amount or waste: on the one hand, stone produced in quarries that, due to its size or fragmentation can not be used in building and on the other hand, sludges produced in the marble cutting-polishing in shops, composed by a dust-water emulsion with a solid percentage or 20% approximately. The larger amount of generated waste has caused a quick saturation of the capacity of the rubbish dump builded and financed by public initiative, that origines the necessity for finding and assigning space to build new rubbish dumps. S.A. REVERTE has enough know how as CaC03 manufacturer to carry out the development and implantation of a demonstration plant able to absorb the waste production. In the new demonstration plant, by means of dry way grinding methods, developed by S.A. REVERTE, solid wastes will be processed obtaining high whiteness carbonates, low granulometry and high quality applicable to many sectors (Paintings, printing inks, plastics, electrical and communications wires, glass, fertilizers, etc.). Finally, with the demonstration plant to develop, present wastes will be radically eliminated, giving them a substantial added value, obtaining moreover a substantial environment improvement and a high socio-economical impact in a depressed area and creating more than 28 work places. The waste treatment capacity of the plant will be: -Solid Wastes: 280.000 Ton/year. -Sludge: 64.000 Ton/year. The environmental investment will be: 352.430.000 Pta.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
