Coupling of CORINAIR data to cost-effective emission reduction strategies based on critical thresholds

Objective

The aim of the project is to apply and develop a set of tools already in use for assessing cost-effective emission reduction scenarios to minimise environmental effects in European countries. The project would contribute to the national implementation of the Community Strategy to Combat Acidification for achieving non-exceedance of critical loads for acidifying deposition.

The project is based on applying and developing a set of tools already in use for assessing cost-effective emission reduction scenarios to minimise environmental effects in European countries. A consortium of organizations from four EU-countries (Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Spain) is responsible for the implementation. The project aims at developing and implementing a transparent technique to use CORINAIR emission inventory database for future emission estimates in high spatial resolution to study of emission reduction effects within an area or country of interest and to pinpoint ecosystems experiencing an excess of deposition or exposure. The environmental effects include acidification, eutrophication and ozone effects. The dissemination of the knowledge and the integrated use of emission, deposition and impact models is in high priority. The project contains several elements of relevance for the development and implementation of the Community environmental policy, e.g. Community Strategy to Combat Acidification, Regulation 3528/86 'Protection of forests against atmospheric pollution', and the extensive use of CORINAIR emission database system. The integrated methodology to be developed in the project allows a detailed and simultaneous study of emission abatement and ecosystem impacts, and thus give the countries further possibilities in achieving cost-effective allocation of emission controls. The techniques are fully applied in all four participating countries.
