Objectif

The aim of the project is to integrate environment in the tourist development on the islands of Kefalonia and Ithaca. Some of the anticipated results are the following: To gain a realistic picture of the true environmental problems of the two islands, improve the tourist services offered and the quality of life. To establish a partnership between the local authorities, the private sector (hotels and tourist enterprises in general), the public and in general all the interest groups of the community, measure the progress made during the implementation of the project, transfer/exchange knowledge and experience with other European countries, raise awareness of other Greek municipalities.

The present proposal has been prepared by the Association of Local Authorities of Kefalonia & Ithaca (TEDK-KI). Its aim is to integrate environment in the tourist development on the islands of Kefalonia and Ithaca. Besides TEDK-KI, who is the proposer, other project partners are the following: the Central Union of Local Authorities of Greece (KEDKE), the International Council of Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), and the Municipality of Calvia in Majorca (Balearic Islands). The Union of Hotels of the two islands and the inter-municipal enterprise, which is responsible for the disposal of solid waste, have expressed their support too. The duration of the project is 3 years and it will comprise the following phases:

- Phase I: Organization of the Project.
- Phase II: Assessment of Current Status in Tourist Enterprises- Implementation of Pilot Projects.
The necessary information will be collected by carrying out eco-auditing in selected hotels and tourist enterprises. Special attention will be paid to the sectors of solid waste management, water management, energy saving and green purchasing.
