Objective
The overall objectives of the project are to demonstrate the feasibility of a source separated collection and procession of wet compostable and dry streams of MSW.
The specific objectives are:
- To design and evaluate optimal containers and collection systems;
- To adapt and improve the technology for preparing compost;
- To develop and demonstrate public educational programmes;
- To evaluate public acceptance and to use it to correct planning and educational programmes;
- To evaluate and demonstrate economic feasibility and the advantages of the proposed method;
- To evaluate and demonstrate environmental aspects of the proposed method.
The work will be carried out in the town of Kiriat Tivon, which has 20,000 inhabitants. The town has experienced different types of recycling programmes. The project is planned to include all factors: end users and treatment of the two streams, education programme, detailed planning of containers and collection system as well as monitoring programmes. Participation of delegates from other towns in Israel and from towns outside Israel (Palestinian Authority, Jordan and towns working with Kiriat Tivon in the MEDURBS programme) will start from the planning stage and will continue all along. It is anticipated that this demonstration project will lead to the adoption of the proposed method by communities.
The demonstration programme outlined here is based upon the fact that the composition of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Mediterranean countries differs from that typical of western Europe or the USA. The MSW in the Mediterranean region is relatively rich in respect to compostable organic matter (comprising, together with yard waste, more than 50% of the waste). It is possible to recycle most of the MSW if the organic wet fraction is recycled to produce compost. Clean compost that does not pollute soils has to be produced from source-separated material. The goal of this work is to demonstrate the suitability of source separation of MSW to wet compostable and dry streams.
