Conservation and rehabilitation of fragile insular ecosystems

Objective

The principal objectives of the project are:
- Conservation of animal and plant species which are cultivated or not, rare and/or endangered in the three archipelagos;
- Creation of an observatory to monitor the ecosystem of each archipelago and determine the components.

This project will encourage the conservation and the rehabilitation of three fragile ecosystems: 1. KERKENNAH (15.000 ha, 14.000 inhabitants, flat landscape, arid climate, main revenue from fishing, agriculture in addition); 2. ZEMBRA (370 ha, 10 inhabitants, mountainous landscape, arid climate, humidity, national park designated for its nature reserve and surrounded by a marine park; 3. LA GALITE (700 ha, 8 inhabitants, mountainous landscape, arid climate, humidity, surrounded by a marine reserve). The three archipelagos contain several land and marine, endemic, rare and/or endangered species of fauna and flora.

The specific actions are:
- To create a programme combining the promotion of sustainable nature development and preservation of the land and marine biodiversity in Kerkennah, as well as the improvement of the standard of living of the inhabitants;
- To improve the knowledge of the land and marine ecosystems in La Galite;
- To rehabilitate the agricultural sector of La Galite;
- To develop a management programme of the Zembra nature reserve and marine park.

The results expected are:
- Creation of a national park in La Galite;
- Protection of rare or endangered animal and plant species;
- Improvement of the living conditions of the Kerkennah inhabitants;
- Methodology suitable for protection and rehabilitation of fragile insular ecosystems, and applicable to similar areas;
- Recognition of Zembra and La Galite as "specially protected areas of Mediterranean interest" (ASPIM, new protocol of the Barcelona Convention).
