Objectif
The natural qualities and attributes of the site are threatened because of the irregularity of the water regime of the lake, industrial activities, households, excess waters for irrigation and habitat deformations. Therefore, formulation of a sound management plan for the lake became a necessity for its protection, development and sensible use.Through this project:
- Alternative scenarios and formulations will be developed and an optimal land use pattern will be obtained in the framework of sustainability principles;
- A water management programme will be established in order to protect the natural water regime of the site;
- Feasible solutions will be obtained for the pollution problems caused by industry, households and agriculture;
- Habitats will be restored and new habitats will be developed for breeding;
- Precautions will be taken against the sedimentation problem of the lake;
- At the visitor centre of the National Park, a video system and exhibition rooms will be established;
- A "Lake Management Committee" will be organised for the protection, development and management of the lake;
- Training activities will be carried out on "Functions and Importance of Wetlands" and "Preparation of Management Plans for Wetlands".
Through the co-ordination of the Ministry of Environment, the project shall be realised together with the Department of Landscape, Faculty of Agriculture, Ankara University and General Directorate for National Parks and Wildlife of the Ministry of Forestry. Also participation will be obtained from the related governmental bodies, NGOs, local administrations and scientists. Participation by the local people in the protection activities of the site and in the application of the management plan will be sought.
Manyas Kus Lake (Lake Bird), is one of the most important and famous wetlands of the West Anatolia Region because of its ecological characteristics. Manyas Kus Lake is located in the northern part of Manyas County, west of the Susurluk-Bandirma Highway. The lake extends in an east-west direction to the south of the Marmara Sea and it is 20 km in length and 14 km wide. Manyas Kus Lake is on the most significant bird migration routes entering Anatolia from the Western region and every year about 3 million birds visit the lake. At the same time it is one of the most important breeding sites for the birds in Turkey. Part of Manyas Kus Lake, covering 64 hectares, was designated a National Park on July 27, 1959. It was awarded a Class A European Diploma in 1976, a status granted by the Council of Europe. At the same time, Manyas Kus Lake is one of the Ramsar Sites of Turkey.
