Northwestern Mediterranean Anchovy : Distibution, Biology, Fisheries and Biomass Estimation by Different Methods.

Objective

The principal objectives of the research project refer to:
north-western Mediterranean anchovy spatial distribution along the Catalan Sea, Gulf of Lions and the Ligurian Sea, by egg and larval surveys;
genetic identification of the possible different stock units;
abundance estimation by 2 direct and independent methods, batch fecundity method and acoustic method.
and comparison of anchovy biomass estimates between the methods applied, by areas corresponding to the stratification obtained from the first and second objectives. Mean biomass estimates obtained by population dynamcis will enhance comparative criteria.

4 phases are identified as follows.
Phase 1 is the identification of spawning areas. In order to apply the batch fecundity method an exploratory egg and larval survey will be done after the peak spawning period.
Phase 2 is biomass estimation. Once the area of work is defined by the survey of Phase 1, 2 current methods for estimating the biomass will be applied. The first one (batch fecundity method) implies an intensive egg sampling survey along the distributional boundaries and the second one will provide estimates based on acoustic trackings and will improve the knowledge about the schooling behaviour of these species.
Phase 3 is the genetic analysis from samples obtained by size fractions and from which a number of 35 enzymes will be analysed. Analysis of genetic divergence combined with data from genetic distance will serve to identify different stock units.
Phase 4 is the population structure and exploitation pattern. In order to get the appropriate information to apply analytical models for population dynamics, length distribution of anchovy landings will be taken for different areas and gear as well as biological and catch effort data.
