Objective
The objectives are: to review and to improve the database of the commercial fleets, gears, landings, catch rates and fishing operations; to review and to improve the biological database of the main crustacean stocks and of their exploitation; and to carry out an integrated analysis of the state of the stocks and of their exploitation, together with the technical and economical aspects of its exploitation, contributing to reasonable management of the southern crustacean stocks of Portugal and its fisheries.
Phase 1 of the research is the commercial data involving:
review of the existing commercial data;
design and organization of computer files for the information concerning landings and fishing operations;
collection of commercial data at landing ports during the period of 2 years;
collection at the vessels and/or at the fishing companies offices of data on catches, on fishing effort, on catch rates and on other relevant items concerning the handling, processing and sale of the products of the main species caught, within a period of 2 years;
and updating of all the commercial database.
The second phase is the biological data involving:
review of the sampling programmes at the landing ports for the target species;
design and organization of computer files for the biological information on the main species caught;
collection of biological data by sampling the landings at the ports;
collection of biological data on board of the research and commercial vessels;
and updating of all the biological database.
The third phase is quality control involving:
a review of quality control systems used in the crustacean fisheries;
market studies envisaging final products with competitive commercial quality;
and the preparation of a manual containing rules for the handling of the catch and for the processing of the final product, taking into consideration the EEC regulations and the requirements of the market;
The fourth phase is analyses and assessments involving:
assessment of the state of the stocks of the main species and of the fishery, applying the most recent methods for length frequency analyses envisaging also the possibility of projecting the composition by sizes (or ages) of the catches and biomasses at short term;
bioeconomical modelling;
and data analyses.
