MYCORRHIZAL TECHNOLOGY.

Objective

TO INVESTIGATE THE INTERACTIONS IN THE RHIZOSPHERE BETWEEN MYCORRHIZAL AND RHIZOSPHERIC FUNGI THAT LEAD TO ENHANCED NITROGEN AVAILABILITY AND GROWTH OF SPRUCE IN MIXED AS COMPARED TO PURE STANDS.

THE STUDY IN MIXED STANDS (PICEA SITCHENSIS WITH LARIX SPP, PINUS SYLVESTRIS, PINUS CONTORTA) IS AIMED AT PROVIDING ANSWERS TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:
- DOES THE MYCORRHIZAL ASSOCIATION OF THE SECONDARY SPECIES ASSIST IN THE FORMATION OR FUNCTIONING OF SPRUCE MYCORRHIZAS ?
- IF THE EFFECT IS THROUGH THE MYCORRHIZAS, WHY IS THE SPRUCE UNABLE TO FORM A PROPERLY FUNCTIONING MYCORRHIZAL RELATIONSHIP WHEN PLANTED PURE ?
THE ABILITY TO ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS IS RELEVANT NOT ONLY TO THE PARTICULAR MIXTURE STUDIED BUT ALSO TO THE WIDER MATTER OF THE INTER-RELATION BETWEEN TREES IN MIXED STANDS. SUCH KNOWLEDGE WOULD ENABLE FORESTERS TO MAXIMISE BOTH PRODUCTIVITY AND ECOLOGICAL STABILITY THROUGH INFORMED MANIPULATION OF MIXED SPECIES WOODLANDS, SO ENSURING HIGH AND CONTINUED PRODUCTIVITY FROM EUROPE'S FOREST RESOURCES.

THE WORK WILL CENTRE ON:
- INSTALLATION OF FIELD EQUIPMENT;
- PRODUCTION OF PLANTS FOR GREEN HOUSE EXPERIMENT;
- AANALYSIS OF MYCORRHIZAL POPULATIONS;
- BIOASSAY OF MYCORRHIZAL INFECTION BY OUTPLANTED SEEDLINGS;
- COLLECTION OF MYCORRHIZAL SPOROCARPS;
- N-MOVEMENT STUDIES;
- DATA NALYSIS AND REPORTING.
