Objective TO STUDY THE BASIC ASPECTS OF CORK-TREE BIOLOGY AND TO CHARACTERIZE THE CORK-OAK FOREST IN CATALONIA. TO TEST THE USE OF NUCLEOPOLIHEDROSIS VIRUS (NPV) IN THE BIOLOGICAL FIGHT AGAINST DEFOLIATING INSECTS OF QUERCUS SUBER (LYMANTRIA DYSPAR AND MALACOSOMA NEUSTRIA). THE WORK WILL BE DIVIDED IN : 1. BIOLOGICAL PART : MORPHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF REPRODUCTIVE ORGANS OF QUERCUS SUBER. CHARACTERIZATION OF PHELLOGEN AND STUDY OF ITS ACTIVITY IN RELATION TO CORK PRODUCTION. 2. ECOLOGICAL PART : CHARACTERIZATION OF CORK-OAK FOREST BY MEASURING ECO-PHYSIOLOGICAL PARAMETERS WITH THE AIM OF EVALUATING THE IMPORTANCE OF AMBIENTAL FACTORS IN CORK PRODUCTION. BIOLOGICAL FIGHT PART : SCREENING FOR VIRULENT STRAINS OF NUCLEOPOLIHEDROSIS VIRUS (NPV) AND TESTING THEIR KILLING CAPACITY AGAINST LYMANTRIA DYSPAR AND MALACOSOMA NEUSTRIA. SELECTION OF THE MORE ACTIVE STRAINS, INOCULUM MULTIPLICATION AND LARGE SCALE FIELD TESTING IN SARDINIA.
