Objectif
- TO IDENTIFY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN GRADING SYSTEMS OF THE DIFFERENT COUNTRIES AND SYSTEMS IN THE COMMUNITY. - TO ESTABLISH STANDARISED PROCEDURES FOR SAMPLING, TESTING, COLLATING, ANALYSIS ON EUROPEAN TIMBERS IN ORDER TO OBTAIN CHARACTERISTIC VALUES.
WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF THE TIMBER DESIGN CODE EC 5, WHICH WILL HAVE AUTHORITY THROUGHOUT THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENT CAN BE REACHED ON A STANDARISED METHOD FOR DETERMINING CHARACTERISTIC STRENGTH VALUE FOR STRESS GRADED TIMBER.
DIFFERENT COUNTRIES HAVE DEVELOPED THEIR OWN GRADING SYSTEM WHICH SUIT THEIR SPECIES, MARKET CONDITIONS AND STRUCTURAL DEMANDS, AND IT IS UNLIKELY THAT ONE GRADING SYSTEM WOULD FIND FAVOUR WITH ALL OF THEM.
THE AIM SHOULD THEREFORE BE TO ASSIGN THE VARIOUS GRADING SYSTEMS TO THE STRENGTH CLASSES, AND FOR THIS A STANDARISED METHOD FOR DERIVING CHARACTERISTIC VALUES IS ESSENTIAL.
THE RESEARCH WORK IS DIVIDED IN :
- COMPARISON ABOUT NATIONAL AND EEC GRADING RULES BY TESTING 500 SAMPLES OF BOTH "STITKA SPRUCE" AND "NORWAY SPRUCE".
- COLLECT DETAILED INFORMATION ON NATIONAL RULES FOR DERIVATION OF CHARACTERISTIC VALUES AND ESTABLISH STANDARD PROCEDURES.
