MICRO DEFECT FREE CERAMIC COMPONENTS

Objectif

The aim of the project is to determine the extent to whic h the quality and reliability of ceramic microelectronic components and their rejection rates during manufacture can be improved by new powder processing methods involving primarily the production of the components in 'clean room' conditions and the use of new chemical production methods for the production of higher grade 'advanced' ceramic powders. In particular the economic advantages obtained by using these improved processes will be assessed. The study will be performed on barium titanate powder which has been chosen because of its common usage in the field of microelectronic components.
The aim of the project is to determine the extent to which the quality and reliability of ceramic microelectronic components and their rejection rates during manufacture can be improved by new powder processing methods involving primarily the production of the components in clean room conditions and the use of new chemical production methods for the production of higher grade advanced ceramic powders. In particular the economic advantages obtained by using these improved processes will be assessed. The study will be performed on barium titanate powder which has been chosen because of its common usage in the field of microelectronic components.

Samples of barium titanate powders, doped with dysprosium to inhibit grain growth, were prepared both by a conventional (mixed oxide process) and an advanced (coprecipitation) process. The most important physicochemical characteristics of the powders, as well as their sintering behaviour, have been determined. Tape casting has been performed on both powders, in conventional clean room conditions and multilayer components obtained.

The advantages and disadvantages of the powders, as well as of the clean room processing, have been assessed.
THE USE OF "CLEAN-ROOM" CONDITIONS IN PRODUCTION AND PROCESSING OPERATIONS IS WELL ESTABLISHED AND ESSENTIAL IN MANY AREAS LIKE MICROELECTRONICS, PHARMACEUTICAL PRODUCTS. IT HAS NOT YET BEEN DEVELOPED FOR THE CERAMIC INDUSTRIES. VERY LITTLE INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE RELATING TO CERAMIC SYSTEMS THEREFORE.
A LACK OF HOMOGENEITY IN CERAMIC POWDER PRODUCED BY CURRENT STATE OF THE ART MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUES GIVES RISE TO VARIATIONS IN THE ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES OF THE FABRICATED DEVICES, AND A LOWER RELIABILITY THAN IS CURRENTLY REQUIRED BY EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURERS.
THE PROGRAMME CARRIES A VERY SIGNIFICANT INNOVATIVE ELEMENT.
POWDERS WILL BE PREPARED, PROCESSED AND SINTERED UNDER CLEAN CONDITIONS. AIR-BORNE ORGANIC AND INORGANIC CONTAMINATION WILL THEREFORE BE ALMOST COMPLETELY EXCLUDED.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
