IMPROVED ALUMINIUM ALLOY MATRIX COMPOSITES THROUGH MICRO- STRUCTURAL CONTROL OF THE PROCESSING AND FABRICATION ROUTES

Objetivo

The aim of the project is to produce an Al metal matrix composite with: - improved fracture toughness; plus - better elevated temperature properties. The main programme will be based on Al-6061+SiC and Al-6061+SiC+Al2O3. It is aimed to produce the MMC with a range of 15-50 volume percent ceramic and to study the following aspects: - variations in manufacturing parameters, fabrication routes and heat treatment procedures; - variations in particle size, in particle shape (an aspect which has received little attention to date), and in the ratio of the two ceramic compounds added. It is expected that this project will enable Al-matrix composites with improved properties, which have a potential world market for a wide range of engineering applications. The preliminary programme using composite systems, of which both LNETI/University of Strathclyde (powder metallurgy) and Cray (liquid pressure infiltration) have previous experience, is now in its final stages. Both production routes can now make low porosity, well dispersed composites. The second stage, using the 6061 aluminium alloy + SiC is just commencing. Methods of assessing fracture toughness in composites are being critically examined.
The aim of the project is to produce an aluminium metal matrix composite with improved fracture toughness and better elevated temperature properties.
The main programme is based on aluminium 6061 + silicon carbide and aluminium 6061 + aluminium oxide (Al203) produced with a range of 15 to 50 volume per cent ceramic to study the variations in manufacturing parameters, fabrication routes and heat treatment procedures and variations in particle size, in particle shape and in the ratio of the 2 ceramic compounds added.

Metal matrix composites (MMC) based on aluminium 6061 have been satisfactorily manufactured and fabricated with 15 or 20% silicon carbide, with 10% silicon carbide + 5% aluminium oxide (Al203), with 5% silicon carbide + 10% aluminium oxide (Al203) and with 15% aluminium oxide (Al403) (saffil) using a hot pressing powder metallurgy route, and with 60% silicon carbide, 10% silicon carbide + 10% aluminium oxide (Al203) (saffil) and 10% silicon carbide + 20% aluminium oxide (Al203) using a liquid infiltration method, modified through the use of novel preforms.

Metallographic procedures have been developed to reduce the artefacts due to unsatisfactory preparation. room and elevated temperature testing of some MMCs have been reported.

It has been established that accelerated ageing occurs in aluminium 6061 + 20% silicon carbide but not with aluminium 6061 + 20% aluminium oxide (Al203) (saffil).
THE MAIN PROGRAMME WILL BE BASED ON AL-6061+SIC AND AL-6061+SIC+AL203. IT IS AIMED TO PRODUCE THE MMC WITH A RANGE OF 15-50 VOLUME PERCENT CERAMIC AND TO STUDY THE FOLLOWING ASPECTS:

- VARIATIONS IN MANUFATURING PARAMETERS, FABRICATION ROUTES AND HEAT TREATMENT PROCEDURES;

- VARIATIONS IN PARTICLE SIZE, IN PARTICLE SHAPE (AN ASPECT WHICH WAS RECEIVED LITTLE ATTENTION TO DATE), AND IN THE RATIO OF THE TWO CERAMIC COMPOUNDS ADDED.

IT IS EXPECTED THAT THIS PROJECT WILL ENABLE NEW AL-MATRIX COMPOSITES WITH IMPROVED PROPERTIES, WHICH HAVE A POTENTIAL WORLD MARKET FOR A WIDE RANGE OF ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS.
