COERCIVITY IN ND-FE-B PERMANENT MAGNETS AND MAGNETISATION ST STUDIES OF MONOCRYSTALLINE TERNARY RARE EARTH COMPOUNDS.O

Objetivo

The study of the coercivity in Nd-Fe-B magnets The effect of irradiation by electrons on the Nd-Fe-B permanent magnet properties The investigation of the anisotropy and exchange interaction on the R2(Co,Fe)14B series and the preparation of the new phases of the R-Fe-N type. The expected scientific benefits will arise from a better understanding of the mechanism of coercivity in different types of Nd-Fe-B magnets and to relate it with microstructure.and also to the different mechanisms which have been invoked to account for coercivity This will help in defining optimized processes for improving the value of the coercivity and the quality of the permanent magnet properties.
The intrinsic coercivity in neodymium iron boride type magnets was studied by different experimental methods: domain patterns, magnetization curves, hysteresis loops, temperature dependence of the coercivity, angular dependence of the coercivity and magnetic after effects. The actual behaviour was analyzed by the existence of a nonideal microstructure. An activation volume where the magnetization reversal occurs was determined. The influence of irradiations with electrons of 2MeV energy has been studied in neodymium iron boride type magnets. Magnets prepared from melt spun materials seem less sensitive than the sintered ones.
Different series of monocrystalline samples have been prepared (R(2)T(17), R(2)T(14)boride, R iron(11)titanium where R = rare earth metal and T = transition metal). They were investigated in high field magnetization studies in quasistationary fields up to 40 T and in pulse fields up to 60 T. Models describing the magnetization processes in these compounds in terms of exchange interactions and crystal field interactions have been developed. A new experimental technique has been developed for the study of the exchange interactions and crystal field interactions on powders. This technique is based on the free rotation of powder particles in the applied magnetic field.
THE PROPOSED RESEARCH PROJECT INCLUDES THREE MAIN OBJECTIVES:

- THE STUDY OF THE COERCIVITY IN ND-FE-B MAGNETS,
- THE EFFECT OF IRRADIATION BY ELECTRONS ON THE ND-FE-B PERMANENT MAGNET PROPERTIES,
- THE INVESTIGATION OF THE ANISOTROPY EXCHANGE INTERACTIONS ON SOME R2(CO,FE)14B SERIES AND THE PREPARATION OF THE NEW PHASES R-FE-N TYPES.

WHILST THE MAIN INTEREST IS DEVOTED TO THE COMPOUND ND2FE14B WHERE SOME WORK HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT IN OPTIMIZING THE MAGNETIC CHARACTERISTICS BY ALLOYING AND CHOOSING APPROPRIATE PREPARATION METHODS, LITTLE WORK AS YET HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT ON BASIC MAGNETIC PROPERTIES ON MONO-CRYSTALLINE SAMPLES.

SINGLE-CRYSTALLINE COMPOUNDS WILL BE PREPARED THROUGH THE CZOCHRALSKI METHOD IN AN TRIARC-MELT INSTALLATION WHICH HAS BEEN DEVELOPED AT THE NATUURKUNDIG LABORATORIUM OF THE UNIVERSITY OF AMSTERDAM.
