TEXTURE AND PLASTIC ANISOTROPY IN ALUMINIUM LITHIUM ALLOYS

Objective

The aim of the projec t is to determine the influence of alloying elements on the texture development in 3 various Al-Li model alloys. The programme includes 3 parts: Theoretical and experimental studies of rolling texture development: rolling experiments on technical and large grainsize alloys to determine the slip systems, slip inhomogeneities and lattice reorientations of individual grains. Experimental study of texture evolution during heat treatment. Plastic anisotropy will be investigated. The ultimate aim is to provide a method for predicting the mechanical properties of highly textured alloys as occurring in Al-Li.
The aim of the project is to determine the influence of alloying elements on the texture development in 3 various aluminium lithium model alloys. The programme is in 3 sections:
theoretical and experimental studies of rolling texture development rolling experiments on technical and large grain size alloys to determine the slip systems, slip inhomogeneities and lattice reorientations of individual grains;
experimental study of texture evolution during heat treatment;
measurements of plastic anisotropy and comparison with anisotropy data calculated from textures.

The ultimate aim was to provide a method for predicting the mechanical properties of high textures alloys which occur in aluminium lithium alloys.

Bands of 3 alloys have been prepared by casting and hot extrusion followed by hot rolling or cold rolling to various thicknesses. Some of these bands were subjected to a further heat treatment. At each stage detailed texture measurements were made by X-ray pole figures and orientation distribution functions (ODF). Tensile tests on hot rolled samples have been carried out to determine the Lankford coefficient R and the yield stress sigma y. The results reveal a pronounced R (alpha) anisotropy; after hot rolling R is very low alpha = 0 degrees and it then increases to over 1 at 45 degrees and then decreases to +/- 0.5 at 90 C. The R and sigma y values could also be calculated using the texture data. To examine in greater detail the mechanisms of rolling texture development, a sample with grains of 3 mm diameter was deformed in plain strain compression and the orientations of 26 individual grains were measured. The lattice rotations of the grains were also compared with the different theoretical predictions according to Taylor type models (full and relaxed constraints) of the grain deformations.
THE PROGRAMME IS AIMED AT DETERMINING THE INFLUENCE OF ALLOYING ELEMENTS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF FORMATION AND RECRYSTALLISATION TEXTURES IN AL-LI ALLOYS. THE PROGRAMME INCLUDES 3 PARTS AS FOLLOWS:

1.- THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES OF DEFORMATION (ROLLING) TEXTURE DEVELOPMENT: - ROLLING EXPERIMENTS ON TECHNICAL AND LARGE-GRAINED AL-LI ALLOYS TO FOLLOW THE SLIP SYSTEMS, SLIP HOMOGENEITY AND LATTICE REORIENTATIONS OF INDIVIDUAL GRAINS.

2.- EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF TEXTURE EVOLUTION DURING HEAT TREATMENT OF DEFORMED AL-LI AND AL-LI-ZR ALLOYS.

3.- PLASTIC ANISOTROPY WILL BE INVESTIGATED.

THE ALLOYS TO BE EXAMINED ARE THE FOLLOWING
- AL-O,7 LI A SOLID SOLUTION
- AL-2 LI A SOLID PRECIPITATE AGE HARDENABLE ALLOY
- AL 2 LI-O,1 ZR AS ABOVE WITH ZR
- AL 2 LI- 2 CU- O,1 ZR TO SPECIFY THE ROLE OF CU AND FACILITATE THE EXTENSION TO MORE INDUSTRIAL ALLOYS.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
