MODELLING OF AN AUTOGENOUS GRINDING PROCESS - DIFFERENTIAL FLOTATION OF THE COMPLEX SULPHIDE ORES OF MOINHO (PORTUGAL). APPLICATION IN THE INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE PROJECT.

Objetivo

THE MAIN AIM OF THE STUDY IS TO CREATE A STEADY STATE PLANT SIMULATOR ADAPTED TO THE MAJOR COMPLEX AT ALJUSTREL AND TO USE IT TO DESIGN AND OPTIMIZE THE FLOWSHEET OF THE FUTURE WORKS AT ALJUSTREL-MOINHO.
A static simulator for the Moinho process is operational and was delivered to Portuguese operators in June 1990. Its function is to assist the start up and optimal running of the industial unit. The importance of regrinding residues and waste from the first washing in the zinc circuit has been demonstrated. It has also been shown that modelling of polymetallic mineral flotation cannot become operational without mineral liberation.

A model automatic grinder has been developed and mineral liberation in the grinding and flotation circuits has been studied. It has been shown that additional research is necessary to model the automatic grinder. Material transport and the role of the grading screen have not been sufficiently investigated at the international research level.

The objective of the research was to further develop and make available a steady state simulator of the process designed by Empresa de desenvolvimento Mineiro (EDM) to beneficiate the Moinho polymetallic sulphide ore from Portugal. The simulator will assist in the commissioning of the full scale plant, and later on, in improving it.

Work was carried out on the designing and calibration of an operational model of autogenous grinding mills and pebble mills based on pilot scale experiments;
the understanding and modelling of the influence of particle size and mineral liberation on the behaviour of the mineral species in flotation circuit, again based on pilot scale experiments;
the insertion of the unit operation models into the simulation package previously developed;
training of the process engineers in using the software.

A simulator of the grinding circuit and of the flotation circuits (copper, lead, zinc) was implemented and made available provided to the process engineers.
Innovative models were developed for autogenous grinding and flotation taking into account mineral liberation. The modelling of the influence of mineral liberation on flotation kinetics provided a significant improvement on the understanding of the process.
Although the simulator is operational, its value for the Moinho project is partly limited by the lack of column flotation models and the need for additional research on the modelling of autogenous grinding.
DEVELOPMENT OF A SIMULATOR FOR USE IN THE INDUSTRIAL PLANT AS AN AID TO DECISION-MAKING AS REGARDS PROCESSES (CHANGE OF PARAMETERS, FLOWSHEET OPERATION, ETC...). THE FINAL RESULT WILL THEREFORE BE AN ADJUNCTION TO THE AUTOMATIC SYSTEM OF OPERATION.

THE RESEARCH SHOULD MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO IMPROVE THE DESIGN OF THE FLOTATION FLOWSHEETS OF THE INSTALLATION BY TAKING MAXIMUM ADVANTAGE OF THE VARIOUS PILOT PROJECTS WHICH HAVE BEEN OR WILL BE CARRIED OUT AS PART OF THIS STUDY.
