IMPROVEMENT OF SOFTWARE FOR SIMULATING THE OPERATION OF AN OPEN-CAST MINE

Objetivo

DEVELOPEMNT OF AN AID TO DECISION-MAKING FOR:
- MONITORING THE OPERATION OF A MINE
- OPTIMUM SHORT AND MEDIUM-TERM PLANNING BY USING SIMULATED TECHNIQUES TO FORECAST THE IMPACT OF A DECISION TAKEN AT ANY GIVEN MOMENT.
IMPROVED MANAGEMENT OF THE OPERATION WILL ALSO HAVE ECONOMIC REPERCUSSIONS AND THESE WILL BE QUANTIFIED.
The software package is organised into a series of interrelated modules which deal with operating methods, extraction methods, drilling, transport and mineral treatment, and which are largely independent. The originality and power of the OP MINE system is in the simulation, in time and space, of mining operations. Based upon a block model of deposits, the simulation gives accurate predictions of the production characteristics following from equipment and mining policy decisions. Even though simulation is not optimisation, this system, when used for a sensitivity analysis of the affects of different parameters, provides an objective basis for taking decisions on short term or long term planning.

The fist topic of the research consists in reinforcing the OP MINE package for the study of open pit mining by the introduction of mining methods other than by shovels and dumpers, by supplementary functionalities for the management of waste dump and ore stockpiles and by modelling and economic characterization of ore processing. The second topic was to develop a software for recording the production results, short and medium term planning and mining control. The advantage of such a software is to improve the decision making on the mine site in order to face problems related to the imperfect knowledge of the orebody or to the technical implementation of the mining method. The inital objectives have been globally reached while on some points the analysis of the problems has led to the research orientations being redefined. 3 new packages have been developed, with the following provisional names: OPCONV used for dimensioning of mining systems with bucket wheel excavator and conveyor belts (the program is written in FORTRAN with the macrolanguage SLAM II); OP MILL used for modelling of ore processing (the program is written in TURBO-C for microcomputer MSDOS); OPPLAN for production recording, mine planning and control (the software is written in FORTRAN with 2 versions: one for microcomputer/MSDOS using the database language DBASE III and a graphic driver for EGA/VGA in extended memory; one for graphic workstation under UNIX with the data base INGRES).
THE STUDY WILL CONSIST OF:

1.- DEVELOPMENT OF HIGHER-PERFORMANCE SOFTWARE

2.- ON-SITE MINE PLANNING AND ASSISTANCE WITH OPERATIONAL FOLLOW-UP.

THE FOLLOWING PHASES IN PARTICULAR WILL BE DEVELOPED:
- CREATION OF NEW MINING MODELS
- INCORPORATION OF NOVEL ACTIVITIES IN THE SOFTWARE
- MODELLING OF TREATMENT PROCESS
- ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF TREATMENT
- ACQUISITION OF OPERATING DATA
- CONTROL OF THE MODEL
- SIMULATION OF MINE PLANNING
- AID TO DECISION-MAKING FOR OPTIMUM PLANNING
- INSTALLATION OF ON-SITE MINING PROGRAMMES.
