Objetivo
ESTABLISHMENT OF NEW EXPLORATION METHODOLOGIES CAPABLE OF LOCATING HIGH-GRADE ORE IN DEPOSITS OF MASSIVE SULPHIDES. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT REQUIREMENT OF EXPLORATION COMPANIES.
Studies in the Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB) were focused on detailed characterization of the ore related phenomena around the Gaviao massive sulphide deposits (Aljustrel area), and application to actual exploration targets (Brejo near Lousal, and Durianas near Panoias).
In the Gaviao property (Aljustrel area) 2 orebodies were intersected by drilling in 1970, on the basis of geology backed up by geophysics. One of the orebodies (Gaviao NE) is an extension of other well known mineralization in Aljustrel and is composed of ore low in copper/gold. On the other hand, Gaviao SW depicts the highest copper grades of the whole Aljustrel camp. There are obvious exploration implications.
Gaviao NE rests on top of volcanic rocks (mine tuff (MT) formation). The immediate hanging wall is composed of a discontinuous jasper layer. Evidence from elsewhere suggests that the jasper may have been originally bedded and later disrupted during deformation.
The stratigraphic position of the Gaviao SW orebody is nearly the same as for Gaviao NE, but here a thin layer of hanging wall volcanics (MTs) is often found between the sulphides and the jasper.
In the Gaviao area there are 2 formations of felsic volcanic rocks at least partly laterally equivalent. These are the lowermost units exposed in the area, and are MT (ore host) formation, and quartz eye tuff (QET) formation.
The predominant alteration type found in Gaviao volcanic rocks (both MT and QET formations) is green facies regional alteration. Whole rock geochemsitry shows that chlorite is often more abundant than estimated optically.
Ore zone alteration is also widespread.
Detailed knowledge of the alteration and is zonation coupled with structural reinterpretation enabled reconstruction of the pretectonic relationships between the various host rocks, and sulphide ores and associated alteration halos around the Gaviao orebodies.
The findings concerning the Gaviao area are being tested outside the Aljustrel area.
THE RESEARCH WILL BE CARRIED OUT ON THE CHESSY OREBODY AND IN THE BREVENNE DISTRICT OF FRANCE, AND IN TWO OREBODIES OF THE ALJUSTREL AREA OF PORTUGAL. FACTORS DETERMINING THE ACCUMULATION OF LARGE AMOUNTS OF BASE METAL SULPHIDES ON THE SEA FLOOR WILL BE INVESTIGATED BY STUDIES ON THE MINERALOGY AND GEOCHEMISTRY (INCLUDING FLUID INCLUSIONS, MINERAL CHEMISTRY AND ISOTOPE CHEMISTRY) OF THE ORES AND THEIR HOST ROCKS, PARTICULARLY THOSE AFFECTED BY HYDROTHERMAL ALTERATION. ZONATIONS OF VARIOUS NATURES AND ON ALL SCALES WILL BE SOUGHT, AS WELL AS A CORRECT AND DETAILED RECONSTRUCTION OF THE SITES OF ORE ACCUMULATION.
THE DISCOVERY OF EMPIRICAL GUIDES TO HIGH-GRADE ORE IS ALSO ANTICIPATED (ANOMALOUS ABUNDANCES OF MINOR AND TRACE ELEMENTS, CRISTALLOGRAPHIC AND CHEMICAL FEATURES OF MINERALS SUCH AS PHYLLOSILICATES).
