Objectif
DEVELOPMENT OF EXPLORATION CRITERIA BASED ON ADVANCED GEOCHEMICAL AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY.
The overall aim of the project has been the development of a robust metallogenic model and derived exploration criteria for granite associated ore deposits based on integrated geochemical, geophysical and geological studies of selected granites in the French Hercynides, the German Hercynides and the British Caledonides.
A common database for each of the 3 study areas has been prepared and a common terminology developed for use in Caledonian and Hercynian terranes. A sophisticated 3 stage model has been developed based on advanced petrogenetic modelling combined with detailed mineralogy, and field and geophysical studies. This involves partial melting of a protolith (in some cases previously enriched in ore forming elements); high degrees of fractional crystallization (up to 50%) and intense water rock interaction.
The first 2 stages represent the magmatic stage, the latter metalliferous mineralization processes and the formation of economic ore deposits. Detailed geochemical, geophysical and geological exploration criteria have been developed based on the model to identify tin uranium granites and subsequently potential areas of metalliferous mineralization associated with them. The criteria developed are suitable for screening digital datasets using image analysis and geographical information systems.
The magmatic stages (partial melting and fractional crystallization) were analysed and exploration criteria for tin uranium granites were developed. The criteria involved geochemical features and geophysical features, (eg, negative gravity anomalies of the tin uranium granites and the age relationships and structural setting of the granites.
The association of tin uranium granites with mineralization and formation of economic ore deposits was also studied involving the following:
accessory minerals and the behaviour of uranium;
the size and dimension of the granites;
lineaments;
hydrothermal circulation.
THE PRINCIPAL AIM OF THE JOINT PROJECT IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF EXPLORATION CRITERIA FOR GRANITE-ASSOCIATED MINERAL DEPOSITS BASED ON COMPARATIVE STUDIES IN CALEDONIAN AND HERCYNIAN TERRAINS IN EUROPE. SPECIAL EMPHASIS WILL BE PLACED ON THE FERTILITY OF THE PROTOLITHS AND DERIVED MAGMA, THE COMPOSITION OF FLUIDS INVOLVED IN MINERALIZATION AND THE ROLE OF LINEAMENTS.
MAIN AREAS OF INVESTIGATION WILL BE:
- COMPILATION OF ALL AVAILABLE DATA (GEOLOGICAL, REMOTE SENSED , GEOPHYSICAL, GEOCHEMICAL, MINERALOGICAL) IN DIGITALFORM;
- SYSTEMATIC MINERALOGICAL, PETROGRAPHICAL, GEOCHEMICAL AND ISOTOPIC STUDIES OF THE GRANITES, THEIR HOST ROCKS AND PRESUMED SOURCE ROCKS;
- PHASE CHEMISTRY AND PETROGENETIC MODELLING TECHNIQUES TO ELUCIDATE THE MAGMATIC HISTORY OF THE GRANITES;
- INDICATOR OF HIGH TO LOW TEMPERATURE WATER-ROCK INTERACTION.
THE ACTIVITIES OF BGS WILL BE MAINLY FOCUSSED ON THE CALEDONIAN GRANITES - CAIRNGORM GRANITE AND OTHER INTRUSIONS OF THE EAST GRAMPIAN BATHOLITH - CONTAINING SOME AU, W, MO, U MINERALISATIONS. A DATA BASE WILL BE ALSO COMPILED BY BGS AND ENTERED ON AN IMAGE ANALYSIS SYSTEM (IAS).
