FUNDAMENTAL ANALYSIS AND DEVELOPMENT OF SMALL SCALE METHODS FOR IN-THE-ORE DEVELOPMENT OF SMALL BARYTE AND FLUORSPAR LODE DEPOSITS SITUATED NEAR TO THE SURFACE WITH SPECIAL REGARD TO THE APPLICATION OF OPEN PIT MINING METHODS WITH LATER TRA

Objectif

AS A RESULT OF THIS RESEARCH PROJECT, A HANDBOOK ON SMALL SCALE MINES WILL BE WORKED OUT, POINTING OUT SUITABLE MINING METHODS, TECHNIQUES FOR BACKFILLING THE OPEN PITS AND UNDERGROUND STOPES, THE ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS OF THE MINING OPERATIONS, THE REQUIRED MECHANIZED EQUIPMENTS AND THE ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF SUCH SMALL SCALE OPERATIONS.
SUCH A HANDBOOK WOULD BE VERY VALUABLE FOR THE EUROPEAN MINING INDUSTRY. IN ADDITION, THE DEVELOPMENT OF SMALL DEPOSITS WITH SUITABLE MINING METHODS WOULD SECURE THE SUPPLY OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY WITH BARYTE AND FLUORSPAR IN THE FOLLOWING DECADES.
The objective of the research project was the fundamental analysis of the possibilities for the mining of fluorspar and baryte lode deposits in the countries of the European Community by small scale mining methods. In the research different mining systems were investigated permitting the extraction of veins situated near to the surface by open pit mining methods with later transition to underground mining. In order to take into consideration the growing concern about the environmental impact of mining the question of the influence of the environmetal impact assessment (EIA) on mining operations is also investigated. A decision method, including economic and ecologic parameters into the decision process, for transition from open pit to underground mining was developed. In order to combine environmental and economic consideration the net present value/benefit worth (NPV/BW) matrix was developed which allows both the maximization of the economics and the inclusion of the consideration of the environmental impact of the mine in the decision process for transition from open pit to underground mining.

An analysis has been carried out on the possiblities of mining fluorspar and barite lode deposits by small scale mining methods. Fundamental analysis included: investigations of the market; a definition of the size of small scale mining; development of the geometry of the mine model; investigation of problems; and analysis of practical examples of transition from open pit to underground mining. A comparison of methods of open pit mining reveals that a transition to underground mining (sublevel stoping with cemented backfill) with ramp in the ore technique is the most economical choice but only when the mineral contained in the ramp is exploited ater the transition in order to minimize losses.

The influence of the environmental impact assessment on mining operations was also investigated. A decision method including economic and ecological parameters in the decision process for transition from open pit to underground mining was developed. Its application on model mines showed that often, if the decision for transition is taken at an earlier stage of operation, the environmental impact of the operation is a lot smaller and the economics of the mine are only affected to a small degree.

Results showed that small scale mining can only be performed economically on deposits with high ore contents and thicknesses. The geometry of the deposit should have a great horizontal and a limited vertical extension. The mining operation should be carried out with used equipment and transport activities by subcontractors to minimize costs. The economics of the whole operation is heavily influenced by beneficiation.

In the case of refilling a pit, analysis and calculations of the dimensions of the natural crown pillar and concrete blocks have also been carried out.
THE PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT IS THE OPTIMIZATION OF THE EXTRACTION OF SMALL SHALLOW BARYTE AND FLUORSPAR DEPOSITS WHICH CAN BE MINED BY OPEN PIT MINING METHODS WITH A LATER TRANSITION TO UNDERGROUND MINING METHODS. A GUIDING METHODOLOGY SHOULD BE DEVELOPED FOR THE MINING OF THESE DEPOSITS AND WOULD RESULT IN A USER'S GUIDE OR HANDBOOK FOR SMALL SCALE MINES.
THE RESEARCH WORK WILL BE DIVIDED INTO FOUR MAIN PARTS :
PART 1) ANALYSIS OF BARYTE AND FLUORSPAR VEIN DEPOSITS - ECONOMICS OF THE BARYTE AND FLUORSPAR MARKET - COMPUTER ASSISTED MODELLING OF A VEIN DEPOSIT SUITABLE FOR BARYTE AND FLUORSPAR VEIN DEPOSIT. EXPRESSIVE DEFINITIONS FOR THE CHARACTERIZATION OF SMALL SCALE MINING OPERATIONS IN THE EEC.
PART 2) EXAMINATION OF THE APPLICABLE MINING METHODS IN OPEN PIT AND UNDERGROUND MINING OPERATIONS ESPECIALLY IN SMALL SCALE MINING OPERATION. RECORDING OF AVAILABLE TECHNICAL AND ECONOMICAL DATA RELATED TO SUCH OPERATIONS IN EEC.
PART 3) DEVELOPMENT OF MINING CONCEPTS FOR SMALL SCALE MINING OPERATIONS FOR A COMBINED OPEN PIT AND UNDERGROUND MINING OPERATION. DETERMINATION OF CRITERIA FOR THE TRANSITION FROM OPEN PIT TO UNDERGROUND MINING.
PART 4) EXAMINATION OF THE RESULTS. APPLICATION IN AN ACTUAL SMALL SCALE MINE.
